ALORA HAYNES Born in Austin, Texas, Ms. Haynes is the Chairwoman of the Santa Fe College (SF) Fine Arts Department in Gainesville, Florida. Ms. Haynes is a well known master teacher, choreographer, and performer in the Southeast, having taught thousands of dancers in her over 35 years of teaching experience.

She attended the Alabama School of Fine Arts, where she worked under internationally renowned ballet teacher Dame Sonia Arova and her husband Thor Sutowski. Before coming to SF, she performed in solo roles and functioned as the Ballet Mistress for the Alabama Ballet under the direction of Arova and Sutowski. She also performed and toured nationally with several other professional ballet companies, including the local professional company, Dance Alive!

Ms. Haynes holds a BFA in Dance from the University of Alabama-Birmingham and an MFA in Dance from Florida State University. Ms. Haynes has been employed at many colleges and universities including; the University of Alabama-Birmingham, Florida State University, Springhill College, Huntingdon College, the University of Florida and twenty-eight years with Santa Fe College.

Ms. Haynes was honored on SF’s “Wall of Fame” in 2000-01 for her contributions to the college. In 2001, she received the NISOD Excellence Award from the International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence for the installation of the SF Summer Dance Institute, an intensive dance workshop held on the campus of SF.

In 2003 Ms. Haynes was elected and served as President on the Board of Directors of the Florida Dance Association (FDA). Later that year, she assisted the FDA to initiate the first Florida Dance Festival on Tour at Santa Fe College, servicing over 400 middle and high school dancers. Now in its 13th year, the workshop has expanded to include a partnership with the University of Florida School of Theatre and Dance.

In 2005, Ms. Haynes is an Executive Producer of the film “Dance of My Heart” a feature documentary about her friend and co-worker Alberto Alonso. The film received the highest of reviews from The Edmonton Film Festival, the Havana International Film Festival and the four film festivals throughout the state of Florida and is now in worldwide distribution. In the five years of the films production, she travelled to Moscow, Toronto and Edmonton /Alberta, Canada, Tampa, Sarasota, and Miami, Florida and Havana, Cuba with the crew to shoot and promote the film.

Ms. Haynes is a member of the Florida Higher Education Arts Network, and on the Board of the Florida Dance Association and the Gainesville Orchestra. Ms. Haynes is a proud advocate for all artists and Arts organizations with particular passion to support the arts in education.
