I Was Just… is a highly rhythmic performance that embodies a response to the recent tragedies on the streets of Ferguson, MO, Staten Island, NY, and Sanford, FL. Sheetal along with Ulka Mohanty explore a hybrid movement vocabulary including tap and jazz with South Asian dance forms Bharatanatyam and Kathak. With live musical accompaniment by Mark Gutierrez on the bass and guitar, the piece seamlessly integrates the sound score by Derrick Spiva.
As a director and choreographer Sheetal Gandhi mixes universal principles with local peculiarities to speak to what is generically human in us all. Sheetal Gandhi’s career that has spanned genres and disciplines including work as a creator and performer in Cirque du Soleil’s Dralion, playing a leading role in the Broadway production of Bombay Dreams, dancing throughout Ghana with the traditional West African dance company Novisi, and singing with the New York based, all-female a cappella group, Anamcara.
